Hi All,
Elizabeth Smith Miller here, (AmeriCorps - SENCorps Member in Knoxville, TN @ Child & Family TN)
For our day of service, I along with the other members at our site are going to take our youth council members to the Moses Teen Center (like Boy's & Girl's Club) and create an awareness bulletin board. We are going to service along side our youth council and the youth from Moses Teen Center. I think this will be a great opportunity for our youth to creatively collaborate with their peers to do something positive for our community and create awareness about Martin Luther King, Jr.
Hope you all have a great MLK, Jr. Day! :-)
Hi All,
Elizabeth Smith Miller here,
(AmeriCorps - SENCorps Member in Knoxville, TN @ Child & Family TN)
I, along with Stephanie (another AmeriCorps-SENCorps member) completed our day of service yesterday (1/14/10). As planned, (well - better than planned) we (along with our youth group) arrived at the Moses Teen Center (Boys & Girls Club) and met the Keystone youth group. It was a great experience meeting the "Keystoners" and allowing the youth to work along side each other to create such a positive message. After meeting, we split into teams to create items for two bulletin boards. The first board was MLK Jr.'s "I have a dream" board. This board featured the well known phrase along with conversation bubbles. These bubbles will be filled with the dreams of our young future, yes, I mean children. Although it was tedious cutting these little bubbles out, it is well worth it to see the amazing dreams that these youngsters have.
The second board was a time line of MLK, Jr. Of course, it begins with his birth, then proceeds through astonishing accomplishments that he has made throughout his years. Two of our youth council members carefully researched his life to fill our time line so that other youth can be educated. They not only liked using the technology, but they learned so much from the experience.
Another youth council member worked on the actual time line.
Although our small service may not seem to be a huge deal to some, that's ok. If it only educates one young mind, it was well worth it. I know; however, that our small service has had and will continue to have a great impact.
Oh, by the way... It wasn't all sweat and tears! We managed to squeeze in a little fun and games with all of the youth!
Thank you Moses Teen Center for allowing us to serve with you.

Hello Fellow Members! Lauren Smith (Member in Fort Myers Florida, Lutheran Services Florida SW region)
Sorry this is coming a week late.
For our day of service to MLK, Jr. I as well as my co-members Brandon Glover and Allison See attended our communities MLK Jr day march and set up a table with information about our agencies services in the park where they set up a fair style event in honor of MLK Jr and his accomplishments. They had children of the community sing and give speeches as well as an art contest and essay contest. We passed out a lot of information and celebrated with the community. The day was a great success!
Cool Laura. That sounds like it was a good time. I dropped by the CCYS shelter here in Tallahassee on MLK Jr. day and they had already blazed and cut a new trail for a challenge course the AC members are building. I gave them the movie, "The Great Debaters," in honor of the day. So let me ask you and Elizabeth a question, since you are "hip to the blog thing." If you could spend a couple days learning anything you want to improve your ability to organize and serve your communities, what would you study?

I think learning how to do street outreach would be very beneficial to my agency. We do a lot of outreach and I think not knowing how to do street outreach properly to get the intended outcome is what is keeping us from taking on such a big project. I think learning how to be approachable to the kids on the streets and how to engage them would be very helpful!
